“Dark Ice Island” is a mini platformer game set on a perilous, icy island full of traps and surprises. The player’s goal is to collect a certain number of coins to unlock the main path, avoid traps and obstacles along the way, and reach the final platform. It’s a blend of strategy and skill that makes the experience simple, immediate, and engaging.
I developed the game using one of the earliest experimental versions of the Spatial.io SDK, which was still in the experimental phase at the time. This required extensive adaptation to the platform’s technical limitations, building gameplay logic, collection systems, conditional triggers, and environmental dynamics from scratch.
Game Features
Arctic setting with suspended platforms on a frozen island and mysterious atmospheres
Coin-collection system: collected coins progressively unlock the route
Obstacle courses: precise jumps and timing to avoid falls or dead ends
Minimalist visual style: clean, simple design choices to ensure readability, smooth performance, and a coherent look that matches the project’s essential approach
Final Objective
Reach the exit platform by completing the challenge.
Challenges Overcome
Working with a nascent SDK meant creating many core functions from the ground up while ensuring stability and fluidity in gameplay. I built a custom item-collection system and event-handling framework to guarantee a consistent experience despite technical constraints.
Project Objective
“Dark Ice Island” began as a personal exercise to explore platforming dynamics in interactive 3D environments. The aim was to test the limits and potential of early-stage technology while maintaining a minimalist design and gameplay logic, focusing on the essence of the experience.
